The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior (FIRO-B)
Michele Lucas, LCSW, BCD
Michele uses the FIRO-B with individuals, couples, families and groups to help them understand the influence interpersonal needs have on the quality of relationships.
The FIRO-B is a paper and pencil self-report tool that measures individual needs for inclusion, control and affection in interpersonal relationships; and the level of expression we give them. The FIRO-B also helps to identify potential sources of conflict between people, and strategies for tailoring relationship-building to the needs of others as well as those of oneself.

Know thyself. |
Imagine the benefit of knowing your own needs for inclusion, control and affection in your
relationships; and being more aware of how others may perceive you as a result. Of course,
effective relationship building depends on our being aware of this important interpersonal dimension in others as well, and in learning how to recognize the other’s expression of their needs in real time and be able to respond spontaneously and effectively. Greater insight into and appreciation of this critical interpersonal dimension results in our experiencing and forging
relationships with others that are more genuinely satisfying to all concerned.
