FIRO-B
The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations
Orientation-Behavior (FIRO-B)
What is the FIRO-B?
The FIRO-B is a paper and pencil self-report tool. It measures individual needs for inclusion, control and affection in interpersonal relationships, and the level of expression we give these needs.
The FIRO-B then provides insight into and appreciation of interpersonal behaviors, one’s own and those of others. The result can lead to developing more effective and satisfying relationships with others.
The FIRO-B is used with individuals, couples and groups in situations where insight into interpersonal behaviors may be useful. It helps people to become aware of their own needs in the three categories mentioned, and expand strategies to meet them. It also helps people to e more aware of how their needs may be perceived by others.
The FIRO-B is also helpful in identifying sources of conflict with others, and ways of tailoring relationship building to the needs of others as well as oneself.
The FIRO-B can also identify potentially satisfying career choices and organizations, or tasks that might increase satisfaction. Organizations use the FIRO-B to identify potential leaders, potential sources of conflict between differing organizational cultures, and to increase productivity of teams and identify contributions of individual team members.
